Winter Skin Care Tips

Winter is one of those times where your skin needs special attention because it can dry out and start cracking. If you already have dry skin or you are beginning to spot the signs of aging, you probably need to be even more cautious of your skin during winter. To hone in on this dilemma, it is important to pick up some effective winter skin care habits.

1. Shorter Showers: A hot steamy shower sounds like the perfect task when it’s cold, but not for your skin. Keep the water temperature in the mid ranges because a hot shower will take away moisture from your skin. The ideal amount of time is anywhere from 5-10 minutes.

2. Moisturize and Moisturize: Moisturize your body right after you shower to lock in all that moisture. If your skin is really dry, use creams rather than moisturizers as they hold less water.  Also, be sure to use sunscreen in the winter.  It's not just the summer months you have to worry about.  The wintertime is still a time when your skin can be harmed by the suns rays.

3. Exfoliate: When skin gets dry in the winter, it means you have a lot of dead skin. Exfoliate with a gentle scrub to replenish your skin. Products with micro-beads are some of the best choices. This process will also reduce and prevent wrinkles, decrease the size of pores, and keep your skin tissue healthy.  When it's cold, you lose blood flow to the skin and the result is a dry, dull tone. Facial treatments can increase circulation and rejuvenate a healthy glow.  Skin care procedures such as Microdermabrassions may be just what you need to get your skin glowing again!

4. Lips: We all know that lips get chapped, can crack, and even bleed during the winter. Protect your lips by using chap-stick or lipstick for moisture.

5. Bundle Up: Your body is vulnerable to the elements when it’s cold. By wearing gloves and socks, you will help your hands and feet retain their moisture, especially after you lather them with moisturizer. This will also help prevent eczema or control it and your nails and cracked cuticles will also benefit from this.

Some other helpful tips:
- Drink plenty of water. Even when there's a chill in the air and thirst isn't overwhelming, water consumption needs to be high to combat the dry air.
- Avoid products with a high percentage of synthetic ingredients (propylene glycol, petroleum), chemical detergents (sodium laurel sulfates), and artificial colors and fragrances.
- Use quality skin care products suited to your skin type.
- Incorporate nutritional supplements into your skin health regimen, such as essential fatty acids, zinc, magnesium, vitamin A, and B vitamins.

When your skin is exposed to wind and a cold breeze, it starts to lose its moisture. Don’t let your skin experience the dreadful problem of dryness by using some of these winter skin care tips. Call Conkright Aesthetics today  at 812.842.0240 to learn more about hydrating products and circulation-enhancing treatments to ease the long, dry months of winter. After all, spring will be here before we know it!

"Mommy Makeover"

“Mommy Makeover”

Pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding are all experiences that many women look forward to and enjoy.  Sure women take pleasure in their new roles as mothers, but there are some unpleasant changes to the body that aren’t so pleasing to the eye.  Throughout a pregnancy and breastfeeding, the breasts and abdomen stretch, causing the skin to lose elasticity.  There also may be specific areas of stubborn fat deposits that are resistant to exercise and diet and a “Mommy Makeover” may be the perfect solution.

Women who have exhausted natural means of weight loss often turn to cosmetic plastic surgery to achieve their desired goals.  Typically, patients who are having the post-baby blues may choose to undergo a combination of procedures in order to regain their pre-pregnancy shape, and this is often termed a “Mommy Makeover.”  Here at Conkright Aesthetics the most combined procedures for this makeover includes breast lift surgery (with augmentation), liposuction, and abdominoplasty (tummy tuck).  These procedures can help restore the breasts to a more youthful shape and position, while tightening and contouring the midsection.  After patients undergo the Mommy Makeover they feel they have been able to reclaim their body and have more self confidence again.

If you are ready to learn more about any of these procedures or to schedule your complementary consultation for your Mommy Makeover call Conkright Aesthetics today at 812.842.0240.

Breast Cancer Awareness

The staff here at Conkright Aesthetics wants to remind everyone that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Whether you have had a breast augmentation or not it is still very important to have a yearly mammogram after the age of 40. For more than 20 years, October has been dedicated to being the month for National Breast Cancer Awareness. It is a time to reflect on loved ones who have won and lost the battle against breast cancer. It’s also an opportunity to raise awareness toward finding a cure, including encouraging women to get a regular mammography screening.

More than 230,000 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer and nearly 40,000 will die of the disease, according to estimates by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It occurs in 1 in 8 women and is the most common cancer in women, but the good news is that it can be successfully treated when detected early. It is important that women perform breast self-exams. This is a tool that may help you learn what is normal for you. The breast self-exam involves looking at and feeling your breasts on a regular basis. If any changes occur contact your health care provider right away.

Here are a few signs of breast cancer to be aware of but these signs are not the same for all women. If you notice any of these breast changes, see your health care provider:

-A lump, hard knot or thickening

-Swelling, warmth, redness, or darkening

-Change in the size or shape of the breast

-Dimpling or puckering of the skin

-Itchy, scaly sore or rash on the nipple

-Pulling in of your nipple or other parts of the breast

-Nipple discharge that starts suddenly

-New pain in one spot that does not go away

**It is very important to discuss any of these symptoms with a health care provider as soon as possible so that if breast cancer is present, it is more likely to be diagnosed at an early stage when it is most treatable.

Some people still believe that having breast implants — whether silicone or saline — can increase a woman’s chance of getting breast cancer but this is a myth, according to the chief physician for Southcoast Centers for Cancer Care. There is absolutely no link between the two. Mammography is still a safe and effective screening tool for women who have breast implants. However, it is important for a woman with implants to inform the radiologist before the procedure is performed so that the mammography machine can be specially positioned to avoid full compression of the implant and additional views may be used to see the breast tissue as the implant is pushed toward the chest wall away from the breast tissue.

On October 22nd from 10am-12pm Conkright Aesthetics is going to be holding a Pumpkin Peel Party and all proceeds will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Call us today at 812.842.0240 so you can be a part of the Pumpkin Peel Party and help find a cure!

New Clinical Team Associate

Hello all,

For those of you who don’t know me I am Jessica Ralph and I am new to Conkright Aesthetics. I joined the team on September 12, 2011. This is a very new experience for me as my previous job was at Home Headquarter’s, which is a kitchen a bath studio here in Evansville. I graduated from Murray State University in 2009 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Interior Design and since graduation I have decided to go back to school and peruse a degree in Sonography (ultrasounds) at the University of Southern Indiana.

What brings me to a plastic surgeon’s office you ask? Well, I wanted to get into the health care environment and get some experience working with “patients” instead of “clients” so I could make sure that the health care field is where I belong. To be honest with you, I never saw myself working in plastic surgeon’s office. Plastic surgery isn’t something I really ever gave much thought to. I’ve seen it on T.V. and have known people who have had Breast Augmentations but never really thought about it being something I would ever consider doing.

In my short three weeks of working at Conkright Aesthetics my perception of plastic surgery has changed tremendously. Not only do I have more respect for people who choose to turn to plastic surgery, but I understand why people decide to have these procedures done. I have learned that many people come to Dr. Conkright because they aren’t happy with the way a certain part of their body may look and have self-esteem and confidence issues. Here at Conkright Aesthetics, we strive to be the best and to allow our patients to get their confidence back! Give us a call today to set up your complementary consultation today 812.842.0240. Can’t wait to meet all of you!

Sincerely,

Jessica
