BOTOX®
BOTOX® has been used therapeutically for more than 17 years to treat a variety of medical conditions. It is approved in more than 75 countries and remains the most-studied botulinum toxin and one of the most widely researched medicines in the world. In 2002, the same formulation-under the label of BOTOX® Cosmetic-was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for treatment of moderate to severe frown lines between the brows in people ages 18 to 65. BOTOX® Cosmetic is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium, which reduces the activity of the muscles that cause those frown lines between the brows to form over time. In 2005, almost 3.3 million procedures were performed with FDA-approved BOTOX® Cosmetic.
Procedure:
During treatment, very low doses of BOTOX® Cosmetic are administered via a few tiny injections directly into the muscles responsible for frown lines between the brows. By blocking the release of a chemical that causes these muscles to contract, BOTOX® Cosmetic enables them to relax. The effects are very localized and, when administered by an experienced professional, do no affect your ability to smile, laugh, or otherwise show expression. BOTOX® Cosmetic is the only product of its kind that has been approved for use in this area.

Risk/Side Effects:
The most common side effects following injection include temporary eyelid droop and nausea. Localized pain, infection, inflammation, tenderness, swelling, redness, and/or bleeding may be associated with the injection. Other possible side effects include headache, respiratory infection, and nausea.
Results:
You can expect to see results within days after your treatment and the appearance of the area between your brows may continue to improve for up to a week. The effects of BOTOX® treatment can last up to four months, at which time patients may come in for a follow-up treatment.

Procedure:
The injection itself usually takes approximately 30 minutes. Although anesthesia is not required, a topical anesthesia will be used to numb the treatment area. JUVÉDERM® XC Injectable Gel will be injected under your skin to add volume or fill wrinkles and folds. After the injection, Dr. Conkright’s professional staff may gently massage the treated area or provide you with ice packs to help reduce temporary bruising, redness, swelling, and/or itching at the treatment sites. There is minimal recovery time with JUVÉDERM® XC Injectable Gel. Dr. Conkright’s professional staff will inform you when makeup can be applied after your treatment.

Risks/Side Effects:
For the first 24 hours following treatment, you should avoid strenuous exercise, excessive sun or heat exposure, and consumption of alcohol in order to help minimize risk of temporary redness, swelling, and/or itching at the treatment site. Some temporary symptoms, such as redness, pain, firmness, swelling, and bumps may occur but usually clear up on their own within a week.
Results:
Most patients see an immediate improvement in the treatment area and only need one treatment to achieve optimal results. The results make you look naturally younger and refreshed. Results may vary and touch up treatments may be required to maintain results, but JUVÉDERM® Injectable Gel can smooth lines and wrinkles for up to a year.
